Dear Residents,
As you may have heard, the Town is embarking on some ambitious plans to revitalize part of the downtown area. A potential range of actions has been identified, from modernizing and revitalizing Centennial Square facilities including the library, gallery, theatre and outdoor plaza (the pool is already scheduled to move to the new south central community centre to be built on the hospital site), to redevelopment strategies for town-owned property in the downtown area.
Lakeshore Rd. downtown will also be redone, which will provide an opportunity to determine the best ways for people, bicycles, automobiles and commercial traffic to get around the downtown area. Considerations include the creation of pedestrian malls, widening of boulevards and sidewalks, and whether cars shoud be banned from certain areas altogether.
The Residents Associations listed below have formed an ad hoc group to facilitate citizen input to this process. We think it’s important that Town staff have a clear idea of what residents would like to see.
So we will be in touch with you over the coming weeks and months to try to gather your thoughts in order to present them to the Town. One of the things we plan on doing is creating a survey to make it easier for you to provide your ideas. We’ll also keep you updated as things progress.
As part of its consultation process, the Town will be holding a series of public meetings. The first of these is the official launch of the project, which will take place on Thursday, December 5 at 7:00pm (presentation at 7:30pm) at the Centre for the Performing Arts. Another general information meeting will take place at the end of January 2014. That’s it for now — we’ll be speaking with you soon.
